2007

Islington's Young Consumer of the Year competition got a celebratory visitor in the form of Radio 1's DJ Spoony.

The Strictly Come Dancing competitor hosted the Islington Finals of the Young Consumers of the Year 2007 competition at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening (8 March). More than 30 students from local secondary schools took part in the highly competitive event.

The competition is organised annually by Islington Council Trading Standards and gives local students the opportunity to test their consumer rights and current affairs knowledge.

The heats were played out between eight teams from Islington Green, Islington Arts and Media, Highbury Grove and Central Foundation. In the finals a strong quartet from Islington Green seemed to be on course for victory but a late surge from Central Foundation School enabled a shock turn around and they lifted the trophy at the last.

The winning Central Foundation team along with the runners-up from Islington Green will now both go on to represent Islington in the regional finals, hoping to become London champions and take their place in the national finals to be held in June.

Cllr George Allan, Executive Member for Customer Focus, Islington Council said: "Teens have consumer rights too. The competition is a fun and creative way to bring business, Trading Standards and young people together to promote awareness of consumer rights and is one example of the many ways Islington Council helps and advises traders and consumers.

"The competitors high levels of consumer knowledge speaks very highly of all the Islington students who took part and I wish the teams from Central Foundation and Islington Green the best of luck in the London finals."

Young Consumers 2007

Every year more than 15,000 young people between the ages of 14 and 17 take part in the Trading Standards Institute's Young Consumer of the Year Competition. Teams compete for the right to represent their local authority, then on a regional basis for a place in the national final.

The two winning teams from Central Foundation and Islington Green will now represent Islington in the London Final at the Imperial War Museum on 23 March, competing against teams from all over the capital. Winners from there will then take on the mantle for London at the National Final at the Trading Standards Institute Conference in Manchester on 27 June.
